Black Bear Mama Teaches Her Three Cubs How To Fish

These are the bears we saw Thursday night around 9:30 PM, it was misty off and on and at the end it got so dark I couldn't take any more pictures so we had to quit, did my best and learned alot about taking pictures with available light
The site is only a couple miles from Camp Run Amuck, where we are staying in Hyder, the cost to go onto the bridge is the same as entering a National Park, you can go as much as you want, you are never guaranteed a bear sighting as these bears are in the wild, and so are you

There are bears all over this area, they have fenced in walkways that they tell you to use to go from the parking lot to the bridge, the bears are strolling down the road all the time to go fishing in the river

You are above the river on one side and a beautiful cove on the other, the fish are spawning up the river and the black black bears and grizzly's have come to fill up before hybernating

Photographers from all over the world come to take pictures of the bears, some set up and stay for the whole season, some are filming documentaries, alot of people spend hours and hours waiting for the bears to show up

We check the bear bridge about 4 times a day, if there are no
bears we go see something else and come back, tonight we saw this bear in the marsh on the way to bear bridge

Finally we get to the bear observation bridge
It's misty and someone sees a bear coming down the river, everyone runs to one side of the bridge and they are crowding around to get a picture

It's a couple cubs

And a mother black bear, and then we see another cub

The mother bear is fishing and trying to teach her cubs, the ranger says they are worried about these cubs as they are two years old and should be fishing already

The cubs don't get out and chase any fish down
but they enjoy the eating

Mom gets another fish and brings it on shore further down and down come the cubs

Off she goes to catch another fish, she catches 4 while we are there

Black bears are between 5 and 6 feet tall, a female can weigh up to 250 pounds but a male can go up to 400 pounds

I now understand when they say don't run from a bear, they are fast

Here they come again, one of the cubs Mom isn't too keen on letting eat all it wants to, don't know if that is the male or not

I made a clicking sound and she looked up at me, kind of scarey

I can hardly get any picture at all, it is so dark, so Cindy and I go home

Love the floppy bear lips!!! The naked construction dudes changing by the side of the road was quite appreciated also! More naked people!!! I also think Gracie is in the perfect spot perched upon the ginormous dashboard of the RV! Damn I miss you guys! I also love the PIX of Rainier with his beloved new stuffed animal toy!! he's such a "PLAYA!"! But all boy dogs are! hee hee hee!

Hi Wilderness Girls,
You are true Wilderness Girls now -- that you have been that close to all of those hungry bears! It sure does make one want to jump in their car and drive to where you are. Up until now - I was perfectly fine with "riding" along with you on the Internet. But after seeing these bears (almost face to face) -- it makes me want to move up into the front seat -- even if it is somewhat broken. What awesome bear pictures!!! You have made this trip so wonderful for us. Thank you once again for creating, planning, enduring (your leg problems) narrating, photo-taking, financing, and taking us along with you on the best TRIP in the world. And you kept the best part for last -- the bears.
By the way, how is your leg and ankle doing?
Take care and be careful on your way home.

Ankle and leg are doing just fine, you'd never know there was any problem. Yes, Barbara we want to come back, Hyder is an incredible place, we saw bears all day long and you are as close to them as over the railing, in fact, Cindy had one staring at her while she was in the car with the doggies, a Grizzly too, who wasnt' too happy, another dog barked at him, not ours, they had big saucer eyes. Very trippy, can't say enough how cool this is, have more pictures of bears, little baby cubs, and bigger grizzly's, will get them on we just couldn't get on the internet tried everything, think the sattelite has a problem and nobody can get on, think they need to get cable, but as you could see it is rather primitive here. We ar e just outside of Prince George, on our way home, be in Hope tomorrow, and then home. It would only take you a couple days to get to Hyder from Seattle, little more from Virginia, Linda2, but I'd go with you if you went, you;d need a professional bear photographer. Yes, I was clicking at it like kitty kitty, I was by myself and was curious, it gave me that "really" look, withering stare, quite scarey, I didn't do that again. You are very close to the bears they are walking down the road when you get out of your car, the rangers keep an eye on them and herd the people around them, but pretty awesome.

Hi Wilderness Girls,
By now you are most likely home in your own little bed and house. It's always nice to be home but still it's exciting to be on an adventure like you and Cindy (and the rest of us who tagged along for the ride) were on. I can't help but feel a little sad now -- wondering where this Blog will go. Does one just abandon it or what? Does it stay here forever or can we save it to a file folder? So until someone lets me know some answers - I am signing off here and will return to plain ole emailing you. Oh, by the way - Welcome Home. This has been one terrific trip. Thank you again for making it so memorable and fun. Thank you for inviting us to come along on this adventure with you. It was GREAT.
